So, You Can Have Your [Insert Dark Person Here]

Politics & Current Events

Reckless metaphor alert from a warm-up speaker at a McCain event:

“Rest assured,” he told the crowd, “that men like Senator McCain will be the goal and the men that my two young boys will emulate and admire. You can have your Tiger Woods, we’ve got Senator McCain.”

Two questions. First, did you use Tiger Woods because that was the only other multiracial person you could think of? Second, if you are going to compare your political opponent to a sports figure in order to deride him, can’t you think of a sports figure who isn’t charismatic, nearly universally liked, extraordinarily successful, and absolutely kicking ass this season? I mean, if all you wanted to do was make an unflattering comparison to a black sports figure, couldn’t you have found a nasty one? “So don’t pick the Michael Vick of this campaign — go for the man who has YOUR dog in the fight!”

FAIL = YOU.

    I’ve heard that McCain is a really smart player and just a real hard worker out there, while Obama (or “B.O.”) is more athletic and just more of an instinctive player out there on the trail.

    I can’t think of an interpretation of that remark that isn’t about racial purity. Obviously, Tiger Woods is worthy of emulation and admiration by anyone’s standards. I find that the most cynical interpretation is usually the most concise: you can have your mongrel, we’ve got a pureblood.
